Aidan Byrne, Tax partner at RSM Ireland, has been invited to Chicago to speak at a seminar aimed at informing U.S. companies with subsidiaries in the U.K. and Northern Ireland about risks in the run up to Brexit and how they need to prepare in the instance of a deal not being reached by the March 2019 deadline. The event is hosted by RSM US and Quarles & Brady, a leading US law firm.
The United Kingdom has until March 2019 to reach an agreement on Brexit. Under existing EU law, all 27 countries in the EU must consent to any agreement. What should U.S. companies with subsidiaries in the U.K. and Northern Ireland need to be concerned about and what affirmative steps should these companies be currently evaluating if a deal is not reached by this deadline?
The event will inform companies of the major issues that lie ahead in the areas of taxation, intellectual property, data protection and labour. Speakers will discuss the implications of a hard Brexit, such as US companies no longer having access to the EU directives which could give rise to withholding taxes on payments made from the EU to the UK subsidiary. Other implications are delivery delays by border control and customs enforcement as well as the cost of VAT on goods shipped into EU.
Aidan will be joined by other senior executives from the health care, financial services, technology and life sciences industries for this informative seminar. The international panel of professionals from RSM and Quarles & Brady will describe the current state of Brexit, offer an update on the timeline and discuss issues businesses should start preparing for now. There will also be an update on current negotiations and review a case study. This event promises to offer an engaging discussion on the risk considerations that companies should be aware of and the effects on businesses.
